Coincidence study of proton-induced excitations in 208Pb using the KRATTA, LaBr3 and-PARIS setup at CCB IFJ PAN

Description

This study details the experimental investigation of $^{208}$Pb nuclei excitation through the inelastic scattering of a 155 MeV proton beam. The measurements were carried out at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) IFJ PAN, utilizing a multi-detector setup designed to capture the complex decay patterns of the excited targets.

The experimental configuration comprised the KRATTA triple-telescope array (32 detectors) for the detection and identification of scattered protons, complemented by the PARIS phoswich array and four LaBr3(Ce) scintillators for high-energy gamma-ray spectrometry. The analytical workflow focused on rigorous energy calibration and the synchronization of the timing signals between the different arrays to isolate true coincidence events from the background.

A central element of the study was the development of $E_X−E_\gamma$ correlation matrices. By linking the excitation energy ($E_X$) derived from the scattered protons with the subsequent gamma-ray emission ($E_\gamma$). The discussion highlights the methodological challenges inherent in high-multiplicity coincidence experiments. These findings establish a framework for the extraction of the Giant Quadrupole Resonance (GQR) gamma-ray decay for the 208Pb nuclei.
