Asymmetric Numeral Systems for data compression in physics experiments

Abstract: ANS entropy coding is used in many modern data compressors, e.g. currently to store data of users of Apple, Facebook, Google, Linux. It combines advantages of previous methods: Huffman coding (low processing cost) and arithmetic coding (better compression thanks to operating on fractional bits). I will introduce to this family of methods - mainly the tANS and rANS variants, especially from perspective of applications in physics experiments, e.g. for data compression during data acquisition for savings in storage and transmission lines.
