About the Conference

Traditionally organised as a national event for more than two decades, the Conference on Neutron Scattering and Complementary Methods in Matter Research has been held in Chlewiska near Siedlce, serving as an important forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience among Polish researchers working with neutron scattering techniques. The 2026 edition marks the first in its international format and also as the first under a slightly changed name, Neutron Scattering and Complementary Methods in Modern Research.

The conference will focus on studies of condensed matter, particularly on the structure and dynamics of materials investigated using neutron scattering and complementary techniques such as X-ray scattering, spectroscopy, microscopy, and molecular modelling. These methods are crucial for addressing challenges in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and engineering, with special emphasis on combining experimental and theoretical approaches supported by advanced computational tools.

An important context for the conference is Poland’s active participation in research at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) and in the construction of the European Spallation Source (ESS).
At present, a key objective is to ensure the full engagement of the Polish scientific community in ESS activities so that Poland’s participation leads to the genuine inclusion of national research teams in European projects and collaborative scientific initiatives. The idea of establishing a national neutron laboratory at the MARIA reactor enjoys broad support within the Polish research community, which regards it as a vital element in strengthening national research and training infrastructure in neutron methods.

The combination of these three efforts – collaboration with ILL, active participation in ESS, development of national neutron infrastructure, and cooperation with other European neutron centres such as, among others, ISIS (UK), MLZ (Germany), PSI (Switzerland), BRR (Budapest, Hungary) and LVR-15 (Řež, Czech Republic) – opens new perspectives for the development of neutron research and for strengthening Poland’s position within the European scientific landscape.

The scientific programme will include plenary, keynote, and invited lectures, as well as oral and poster sessions, creating a space for the exchange of knowledge between experienced researchers and early-career scientists. Particular emphasis will be put on the interdisciplinary nature of research and on fostering international collaboration.
