Description
Warsaw University of Technology, in collaboration with Fermilab, is developing a Beam Instrumentation Phase Reference Line (BIRL) for the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) linear accelerator. The system distributes a 162.5 MHz RF phase reference signal along the accelerator using a coaxial main line equipped with 36 tap points.
The primary objective of the system is to stabilize the phase reference delivered to the beam position monitor electronics. To minimize phase drift, the main-line cable was carefully selected, and a temperature stabilization system was developed for both the cable and the tap points. In addition, a novel two-tone measurement method is used to monitor phase variations in the reference line and apply the necessary corrections.
This contribution presents the overall system requirements, the BIRL architecture, and the design of its main components. Results obtained using a dedicated test stand are also discussed. Finally, the current status of the project and plans for further development and installation are presented.
