Speaker: Federico Carminati (TRANSMUTEX) Title: “Reinventing the future of Nuclear Power” Abstract: The climatic emergency and the geopolitical cost of energy dependence on limited geographical areas show their effects tragically every day. Progress on renewable energies is slow and most experts agree on the fact that they will never completely satisfy the world energy needs. Nuclear energy is the only credible source of baseload, carbon-free energy, but concerns about its safety, waste management, and nuclear proliferation have hindered its deployment. Pioneered at Los Alamos in the ’80s and extensively developed by C.Rubbia and its team at CERN in the '90s, Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) hold the promise to solve the three major problems of nuclear energy and to provide an additional and practically inexhaustible source of energy using Thorium-based fuel. Transmutex SA intends to develop a first-of-a-kind prototype of a full-scale ADS system by 2032. The talk will briefly provide the rationale for the development of an ADS system, and it will then describe the Transmutex project and its current state of advancement.
