Understanding how galaxies evolve through cosmic time is one of the main topics in modern astrophysics. The best way to characterize physical properties of galaxies at their different stages is to take advantage of the full electromagnetic spectra. But it is not enough to have it – the most challenging part is to interpret the information because the overall shape of the observed spectral energy distributions of galaxies is governed by the complicated relations between dust and stellar mass content in galaxies. In my talk I will describe how dust manifests his presence in galaxies, and what is our understanding of the balance between dust and stars and the status of the theories on the shape of the dust attenuation law.
