Liquid crystals (LCs) under the conditions of spatial constraint at nanometer sizes show unusual properties. After the brief introduction to liquid crystalline materials, I will present how behaviour of LC compounds changes when they are enclosed in nanopores of inorganic matrix. I will discuss the impact of pore size on mobility and arrangement of confined molecules. Finally, I will compare confinement effects observed for a liquid crystal constrained in nanopores and in electrospun polymer fibers.
