From rotation-translation coupling to tunable nanosensors. Professor Karl Heinrich Michel and his oeuvre
by , ,
IFJ PAN (hybrid)
Three collaborators of Professor Karl Heinrich Michel, who passed away on October 15 this year, will present a selection of results obtained at different stages of his scientific activity. Prof. Krzysztof Parlinski will discuss lock-in transitions in incommensurate crystals, symmetry of quasicrystals and heat conduction in solids [1,2]. Prof. Dirk Lamoen will give an overview of scientific work of K.H. Michel and summarise achievements in the description of the thermoelastic properties of crystalline phases of fullerenes [3,4]. Dr Bart Verberck will talk about translation-rotation coupling in peapod-like nanosystems [5] and phonons in low-dimensional crystals and multilayered materials [6], which eventually lead to the concept of a strain-tunable nanosensor [7]. After the seminar the participants, whether in-person or on-line, will be invited to share their memories on their scientific and non-scientific experiences with the exceptional wisodm, knowledge, kindness, great culture and profound humanity of Professor Michel.
