Real-time knowledge of the distribution and strength of magnetic fields is crucial to achieve nuclear fusion through magnetically confined plasmas. In experimental reactors – tokamaks and stellarators – this is the role of the magnetic diagnostic, composed of a large set of inductive (and non-inductive) sensors. In this seminar, the magnetic diagnostic’s principle of operation and applications are presented, on a conceptual level and on its application in the development of the diagnostic for the COMPASS Upgrade tokamak. Finally, current research topics on real-time integration of magnetic signals and on the real-time detection of plasma edge instabilities is presented.
