Description

This seminar contribution covers the basic aspects of ion beam therapy, including its physical, biological, and clinical rationale, as well as the need for ion beam range monitoring. A collection of publications describing the results of experimental work and the development of computational methods required for the advancement of range monitoring techniques will be presented. This work has widened knowledge and understanding of the production of secondary radiation induced by ion beams of helium, carbon, and oxygen at the energy range used in radiation therapy. Finally, the design, development, and feasibility studies of novel detectors for proton and ion beam range monitoring in clinical environments specific to radiation therapy of oncological patients will be shown.
